Name: Tom Welhouse CommentsVery nice website, Tom. Enjoyed the tour. I was aboard the Uss Lipan in 1956 for 1 year as an Rm2 before being transfered. Enjoyed my time aboard, had a nice bunch of guys aboard also at the time. Hope we get to see each other sometime. Tom
Name: James Malek BT1/GSM1 CommentsNice website, need some t-shirts printed up for snipes.
Name: SKC Dewey PRIMMER,RET, USN CommentsI came aboard the USS REHOBOTH AGS 50 as a SA in Feb 58 and left SK2 Feb 62. As stated on your page we traveled to some God forsaken places and called it liberty when we could go ashore. Midway, Kwaj. Christmas Island, Johnston Island, Lima, Panama, Adak, and some times even TI San Fran. I continued on from there to NSD Seattle, USS Lynde McCormick (DDG8)w/Viet Nam Service, USS Marshall (DD676) In Tacoma, Wa. and from Feb 68 to Retirement in 77 with COM13 Navy Recruiting Service Seattle. I recogize a few of the names below. It does go a long ways back. Good luck to all.
Name: John R. Bowen, M.D. CommentsNo Snipe,I, but I was the Medical Officer on the Rehoboth from 1951 to 1953. Yes we were classified as an Oceanographic and Hydrographic Vessel but our major work was really underwater sound work. We traveled the Atlantic and the Med and did work in all classifications. We visited Gibralter, North Africa, Monaco, France, Belgium, Scotland, Iceland, Norway, Portugal, Azores, and Madiera. There may have been others now forgotten. Our home port was Philadelphia but we regularly visited Norfolk, New London and New Groton. I will never forget the cruises of the Rehoboth and a lot of my shipmates. I hope many are still alive and well. I am now 83 years old and I wish all the very best. Old Doc Bowen
Name: Terry Wheeler CommentsI ran into some 'snipes' on military.com Forums and one was trying to explain what a snipe was... I did research and Posted your site to the Thread. It should generate some interest. I am a Vietnam Veteran (1967-1968 Army E-5) and the only thing I know about the Navy is you guys drive boats! <grin> I actually went to Nam on the USS Gen. John Pope, but I think they were Merchant Marine or something... I really don't know... we never really saw them. This was an old troop ship with canvas racks about six high and we were in the bottom bow section. There were about 1500 Marines on board and my unit, a small (34) MI unit that moved as a unit from Ft Bragg to Qui Nhon. Anyway... if some of these Navy guys show up, ask them if they are from Military.Com... Good Luck and I enjoyed your story!

Name: Mack Hughes CommentsServed on the USS MOLALA ATF-106 as ENFN from July 1960 to Oct. 1961. Started out in the Skullery for three months and then down to the engine room. Made a Westpac cruise on her and on the way over we were pushed back 87 miles due to a hurricane. Had to put your foot on a bulkhead every once in a while. Nobody could go out on the decks. Tied garbage cans to lines and threw them outside the hatch. The "MO" was a great fleet tug. We were always busy doing something from towing targets to setting off explosives off Catalina Island. We once pulled a carrier from San Diego to San Francisco and entered the bay in dense fog at night. I can't say enough about our CO. The CO and officers and chiefs were of the highest quality. I was just 19 when I went aboard her and after a year I volunteered to put a tanker in commission in Seattle.. The MOLALA is still working but now in the Mexican Navy under a different name as I understand it.

Name: Ronald Gitschier "Gitch" CommentsHi Ol' Snipe... Nice web site - a fine tribute to ARS 39 Conserver! I had the pleasure of serving aboard the USS Conserver ARS 39 from January 1983 through March 1986, homeported in Pearl Harbor, of course. Our second homeport unofficially was with CTF73 in Subic Bay! Just a few more days at Subic and I think I could of qualified for citizenship. I'm an electrician's mate too. Or should I say brush-changer as this beast was a living museum of DC power. Conserver was my first ship, a fine introduction to the USN indeed. I was throttleman underway and sound and security and Officer of the Deck inport. I was the first E3 (EMFN) from engineering to qualify OOD inport. I enjoyed my tour there and always look back on it fondly. Always welcome chats with other crewmembers at wgsr1570@nrcdxas.org. I retire from the USN in November 2004.
