USS Rehoboth (AGS 50)

1959 -1962
Electrician's Mate 2nd Class - Electrician's Mate 1st Class
Took my discharge, went "home" and found I didn't live
there anymore. Re-enlisted and drew orders for USS Rehoboth (AGS
50).
Rehoboth was a Hydrographic Survey ship home ported in Treasure Island
Ca.. She was named after Rehoboth Beach Delaware. Rehoboth
was originally laid down during WW II as a small seaplane tender (AVP). The
"Rebop" was crewed by around 150 enlisted and too many officers, as I remember.
She was 300 ft. in LOA and powered by 4 Fairbanks Morse opposed piston
engines. She was tough duty for a peace time ship, making a 9 month cruise
every year with a 3 month turn-around time. These cruises consisted of 30 days at
sea doing nothing and 4 or 5 days in port for fuel & stores. In port consisted
of Midway, Pearl Harbor, or Adak, Alaska. She made only one liberty port
in the three years I was on her, that being Lima, Peru in 1960. The crew was
extremely close. I miss them. In the fall of 1961 I got orders for shore duty
in Milton, Florida. I left the ship in Adak, Alaska.
